We spent a morning at Kabah which means, "Strong Hand" in Mayan, it is the legendary birthplace of Uxmal's Dwarf magician. Most of it was built between 700-1100 B.C.
This arch acted as a gateway into the city of Kabah linking it by a sacbe (road) to Uxmal a city 11 miles away.
Kabah is most knows for it's Palace of the Masks. It is a building with an entire facade decorated with the face of the rain God, Chaac. The wall was constructed as a jigsaw mosaic of thousands of molded rock. I can't even begin to imagine how long it took the people to build! They were especially obsessed with Chaac in this region because there were no cenotes and so they were entirely dependent on Chaac to deliver the rain.
